We’d been waiting a couple hours for her to show up. When she finally arrived, she seemed really relaxed for a person who’s rather tardy. She made it clear right off the bat that she’d just gotten a “fresh relaxer”. “My hair was starting to look very nappy. It was definitely time for a relaxer!!”</p> <p>My sister and I glanced at each other from across the table. My dad’s fiance just didn’t know. My dad proceeded to give her the other n-word speech, and about how we can’t use negative words to describe ourselves. His fiance simply replied explaining that she doesn’t think nappy is necessarily a bad thing, or term. Those who know my father know that she certainly couldn’t agree. Talk about, uncomfortable dinner discussion. The word “nappy” in our house is akin to the other n-word. We just don’t say it.
